Not too bad at all

Well if you read my picks for the College Football weekend last Thursday than you would have made some money.

But I imagine you didn't trust me enough yet.

So after an 8-2 weekend, how do you feel?

That's right I did okay for the first week of picks. I only missed my two upsets (Tulane and Fresno St) and both of those games were close.

But enough of my success, let's talk college football.

Let's look around the conferences:

  • PAC-10: USC is obviously the team to beat right now. Although that could change weekly I think this Trojan team is for real and will be tough to beat from here on. Oregon is over rated, as is Arizona State and Cal. The Pac-10 in all is not as good as originally thought. Either that or they just can't travel.
  • Big 12: Oklahoma has a real good team again this year. Although they really haven't played a top notch team yet I think they will be (at least) competing for the conference title in December. This is at least the 2nd best conference if not the best. But not many teams have faced a test yet. Texas, Texas Tech, and OU haven't really played a solid team yet. It will be interesting when they do.
  • SEC: I think for the first time in a few years that the SEC could be overrated. Florida is good but I don't think they can beat a USC or Oklahoma right now. LSU hasn't proved anything, Auburn is way overrated, Alabama barely beat Tulane, Georgia almost didn't get out of South Carolina. All of these teams are pretty even but I don't think any of them are national title contenders.
  • Big Ten: Probably the third or fourth best conference, there is some significant mediocrity in the conference potentially. Illinois barely beat Louisiana Lafayette this past week, Michigan got beat by a poor Notre Dame team, Ohio State got embarrassed in LA on Saturday night, and the other teams haven't really been tested. I think it is still a 3 team race for the conference title between OSU, Wisconsin, and Penn State.
  • Big East: South Florida showed up Friday night and played a great game and beat Kansas at the end. But the rest of the conference is bad right now. Rutgers got ROCKED by North Carolina......yes, NORTH CAROLINA. And no we aren't talking basketball. Okay UConn isn't as bad as say Syracuse but the conference isn't very good. Anyone can win the conference though so it should be interesting.
  • ACC: So which is the real Maryland team? The one that lost to Middle Tennessee and barely beat Delaware or the team that took it to Cal on Saturday afternoon. I think it is somewhere in the middle. But so far that is the only impressive looking win for the ACC. FSU hasn't played anyone to prove anything yet, Clemson got throttled by Bama, and VT lost to ECU. Unfortunately the conference will pretty much just beat up on each other for the rest of the season so we won't know anything until bowl season rolls around.
  • Elsewhere: Fresno State's bid for a BCS bowl is over after losing to Wisconsin. BYU destroyed UCLA and proved they are ready to take on someone bigger. ECU squeaked out a win against Tulane to remain undefeated. It will be interesting if BYU and ECU both run the table.....what will the bowl people decide?

I watched a lot of games from Thursday through Saturday night and I think the Kansas at USF game was by far the best one. It was probably the best played game as well. Only 1 turnover and it literally decided the game.

Both teams played very good football and it was unfortunate to see one team lose.

The only thing about that game that I didn't like, and it is somewhat common in football these days, is when USF went into a prevent defense after getting up 14 points. All game they were rushing at least 4 guys and getting to Reesing and forcing him to move or throw it away. And then they get up 14 and they only rush 3. And what happens....Kansas ties it up.

And then they went back to what worked and Selvie got around the tackle and forced Reesing into a bad throw which was picked off and set up the game winning field goal for the Bulls.

Why even bother with that defense? If you are going to play why not play all out? Don't put your weapons in their holster at the end of the game cause you are scared. Let em out to chase down the quarterback and pressure the other team.
