I have seen 2 mock drafts so far and....

I don't know enough to really do a full mock draft so I am not going to try to. But there are people out there that do and they have already released some of their thoughts.

I have seen 2 and one (Kiper's) has a quarterback going #1 to the Lions. That quarterback is Matthew Stafford of Georgia. The other mock I have seen was by SI's Don Banks. He has Andre Smith (OT from Bama) going #1.

Stafford and Mark Sanchez (also a first round QB) might end up being fantastic quarterbacks in the NFL. But I am not convinced. Neither player dominated in college. Hell neither player looked much better than some other guys in college. Sanchez had some big problems in the defensively challenged Pac-10 and Stafford wasn't consistent enough.

Sure both guys have good arms and can make the throws. And I am sure both guys are smart and can figure out the NFL. But I still wouldn't draft one of them with the #1 pick. Hell I probably wouldn't draft one in the top 5. And it isn't cause I think they will be busts...I really don't know.

But if you take an offensive lineman you are going to do 2 things. One is save a little coin. Lineman don't make as much and won't cost as much. And number two you are going to be more successful in the long run with the pick.

Think about it. High draft picks that are quarterbacks who flop are out of the NFL. Tim Couch, Cade McCown, and Akili Smith are all examples. Other ones stick around but not as starters, like David Carr, Alex Smith, and Matt Leinhart.

But then you say "offensive lineman can be busts too". Your right but even an offensive line bust can be a starter. Example.....Robert Gallery. An amazing talent that couldn't compete at tackle is now a starter at guard. Is he a pro bowler? No. But he is still a starter.

If you take a quarterback early you are gambling more so than with a lineman or another position like linebacker.

I think the Lions should either take Andre Smith or trade the pick. It doesn't matter if you don't get the right "value" in return. If I can trade my top pick and drop down to say 7 or 8 and pick up a 2nd and a 5th I am doing the trade. I gain a pick and don't fall that far. There is less risk and less cost at 7 or 8 and you still get a great player.

But its the Lions and I suspect they will take Stafford because he will throw the ball well at his pro day and impress scouts in 7 on 7 drills.
