New Orleans Bowl Preview

R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Southern Miss vs Troy
Sunday December 21, 8:15
on ESPN
Superdome - New Orleans

Why you should watch:
  • Well you have.....
  • These teams have been......
  • And they are......screw it, I can't come up with anything
Why you shouldn't watch:
  • The NY Giants play the Carolina Panthers for home field advantage on NBC
  • This might be the worst game out of all the bowls

Streaks and Scheduling Notes:
Southern Miss:
  • 6-6 (4-4)
  • 4th bowl game in the last 10 years (5-3)
  • 2-0 in the New Orleans bowl (04, 05)
  • They won 4 straight games to become bowl eligible
  • 3-3 away from home this season
Troy:
  • 8-4 (6-1)
  • 3rd bowl game in last 4 years (1-1)
  • They won 3 of their last 4 games
  • Were up 31-3 AT LSU before losing

Key Stats, Figures, and Players:
Southern Miss:

  • Average...Average...Average on both offense and defense. Nothing stands out.
  • Their best stat is that they average almost 200 yards rushing a game.
  • RB Damion Fletcher has 1235 yards rushing and 9 touchdowns this season. He also has 30 receptions for 223 yards and a touchdown.
  • QB Austin Davis has thrown for 2,852 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Troy:
  • Offensively they aren't anything special either. Top third of the league in passing yards, rushing yards, and scoring offense but nothing stands out.
  • Defensively they are solid against the pass allowing only 180 yards per game.
  • They are good in the trenches tough....4th in the country in sacks per game and 3rd in sacks allowed.
  • QB Levi Brown has thrown for 1,775 yards and 14 touchdowns in only 7 full games this season.
  • RB DaJuan Harris has 1,025 yards and 11 touchdowns and 33 receptions for 196 yards and 3 more touchdowns.
Who Wins:

Troy....Southern Miss is a solid team year in and year out but this year they had to win 4 straight against 3 of the worst teams in conference USA (the other win was East Carolina) just to get to a bowl game. And Troy has shown multiple times (against Ohio State and LSU) that they can hang with the big boys...at least for a little while.
